Maila Gibson-Bandmann is a Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning singer/songwriter/recording artist. She is half of the popular wedding music duo, Ben & Maila. Maila’s wedding experience dates back as far as the early 90s when she was in high school. She sang at her first wedding at the age of 15 for a friend’s sister and cried as the bride walked down the aisle even though she was practically a stranger. That’s the day a passion for weddings was realized.
Over the last few years, Maila’s wedding experience has grown from entertaining and emceeing to officiating. Maila is happily married and passionate about her own marriage and loves to bring that same sense of passion and commitment to her ceremonies. Maila was raised Christian, so it’s very natural to weave scripture and prayer into her ceremonies in a real, applicable, and light way. It is important to her to get to know every couple and to allow them to bring what’s important to them into their ceremony.
Maila lives in Honolulu, is a real estate agent, loves CrossFit, and loves to enjoy the outdoor island life as much as possible with her husband and Cocker Spaniel.
Q: How did you first get into officiating weddings?
A friend who is also an officiant recommended that I do it. I resisted because I wasn’t sure how couples would feel about a female officiant. He ended up with a double booking and needed help, so I got my license and filled in for him. From there, the bookings started rolling in as people found out I could do it!
Q: What do you love to do when not officiating weddings?
I love to spend time with my husband and dog hiking, swimming, working out, surfing, or just lounging by the pool with an Oprah or Us Weekly magazine.
Q: Most memorable moment you ever officiated?
When I said, “I now pronounce you Mr. & Mrs…..” and I said the wrong name with such conviction and the maid of honor shouted the correct name as if to scold me and everyone cracked up. That was actually a terrible moment that turned out to be very memorable. Thank God the couple was funny and forgiving and loved that the imperfection made it that much more perfect.
Q: What’s your favorite local go-to restaurant?
Q: Do you have any pets? If yes, what and how many? Names?
Yes! Molly is my 14-year-old cocker spaniel who just went to heaven in April 2017. Now I have another cocker spaniel named Prince and another on the way who we have already named, Kiana.
