Maila Gibson-Bandmann likes to say her “fun job” is officiating while her “real job” is being a real estate agent, although both are very fun and meaningful. Maila has been in the Hawaii wedding industry for over 15 years, mainly as a singer. Her passion for weddings dates far back to high school when she sang at a friend’s sister’s wedding. She cried as the bride walked down the aisle even though she was practically a stranger.

As an award-winning singer/songwriter, Maila loves bringing creativity to her ceremonies. Her style is fun and lighthearted, but still meaningful and customized to every couple. While buying and selling real estate is one of the biggest milestones in a person’s life, Maila holds marriage in even higher regard. She is Christian herself and is very comfortable conducting Christian ceremonies that are fun and relatable. She is also comfortable incorporating Hawaiian elements and philosophy in a casual way.

Q: How did you first get into officiating weddings?
A friend who is also an officiant needed someone to cover a wedding for him. He practically forced me to do it! I hesitated because I wasn’t sure how couples would feel about having a female officiant or if I could really pull it off. To my surprise, it was a natural fit and the rest is history.

Q: What do you love to do when you’re not officiating weddings?
I love spending time with my husband, my dogs, and doing anything outdoors. Of course, I love selling houses and helping people become homeowners too. I feel so blessed to have 2 jobs that make an impact on people’s lives.

Q: What is the most memorable moment you ever officiated?
I said the wrong name when I said, “I now pronounce you Mr. and Mrs…” The maid of honor shouted the correct name and I had the most mortified look on my face which the photographer captured perfectly along with the couple cracking up. While it’s not the best memory, it forced me to triple-check the names of the couples going forward.

Q: What’s your favorite local go-to restaurant?
Merriman’s in Ward Village. I love the atmosphere more than anything.

Q: Do you have any pets? If yes, what and how many? Names?
I have 2 crazy English cocker spaniels named Prince and Kiana.
